1. If buying buttons for a coat, check that the buttons you choose fit through the eyelets of the coat you are going to affix them to before affixing them to the coat itself.
2. Failing Step 1, make sure that you are not wearing the coat when you affix the buttons.
3. Step 2 is particularly important if it is a military-style jacket, or one with lots of buttons.
